Bronze miniature replicas of the Congressional Gold Medal were created to honor members of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. Each replica measures 1.500 inches in diameter.
The 6888th Battalion earned this prestigious award for ensuring mail delivery to nearly seven million soldiers serving in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) during World War II. Remarkably, this unit was the only all-African American, all-female group in the U.S. Army deployed overseas during the conflict.
The front (obverse) of the medal features Major Charity Adams alongside a line of battalion members. An envelope forms a partial exergue, bearing the inscription “WOMEN’S ARMY CORPS,” “WORLD WAR II,” and the dates “FEBRUARY 12, 1945 – MARCH 2, 1946.” It also includes the phrase, “6888TH CENTRAL POSTAL DIRECTORY BATTALION.”
On the back (reverse), a battalion member is shown organizing mail for American troops, with others sorting and addressing letters in a warehouse stacked high with unsorted parcels. Inscribed are: “ACT OF CONGRESS 2022,” “ENGLAND,” “FRANCE,” and “NO MAIL, LOW MORALE.”
