Bronze miniature replica of the Congressional Gold Medal presented to the Harlem Hellfighters
Diameter: 1.500 inches
In 2021, Congress awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to the 369th Infantry Regiment, also known as the “Harlem Hellfighters,” in recognition of their bravery and exceptional service during World War I. The Harlem Hellfighters were an African American infantry unit that spent more time on the front lines than any other American group during WWI. Because segregation policies prevented them from serving alongside white troops, they were assigned to the French Army, enduring extensive trench warfare. Despite their heroism and sacrifices, they returned home to face continued racism and segregation.
The obverse side of the medal features three uniformed soldiers from the 369th Regiment, along with the inscriptions: “HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS,” “15TH NEW YORK NATIONAL GUARD,” and “U.S. ARMY 369TH INFANTRY REGIMENT.”
The reverse shows a commemorative crest made up of elements significant to the regiment, including a coiled rattlesnake insignia, both American and French flags, the Croix de Guerre, a French Berthier rifle, and a tenor saxophone. It is inscribed with “2021” and “ACT OF CONGRESS.”
Obverse and reverse designs by Justin Kunz (Artistic Infusion Program Designer); obverse sculpted by Phebe Hemphill and reverse sculpted by Craig A. Campbell (both Medallic Artists).
