The three-roll set features 120 circulating-quality coins produced at United States Mints located in Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
The American Women Quarters series recognizes various American women who have made notable contributions across several fields, such as suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The honorees represent a range of ethnic, racial, and geographic backgrounds.
Althea Gibson was an athlete who achieved multiple firsts in both tennis and professional golf. She became known for her accomplishments in international sports and served as an early representative for Black athletes in these arenas. By the late 1950s, Gibson had secured 11 Grand Slam titles, including championships at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the French Open.
The reverse (tails) side of the coin features Althea Gibson holding a racket in one hand and a ball in the other, standing by a tennis net. The inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ALTHEA GIBSON,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” and “TRAILBLAZING CHAMPION.”
The obverse (heads) side displays a portrait of George Washington, originally designed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser for the 1932 quarter commemorating the bicentennial of Washington’s birth. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2025.”
This release marks the final year of the American Women Quarters collection series.
