100-coin bags contain circulating-quality coins produced by the United States Mint in Denver. The American Women Quarters recognize various American women who contributed to fields such as suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The individuals selected represent diverse ethnic, racial, and geographic backgrounds.
Althea Gibson was an athlete with achievements in tennis and professional golf. She participated in international sports and was among the first Black athletes in these areas. By the end of the 1950s, Gibson had won 11 Grand Slam titles, including championships at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the French Open.
The reverse (tails) design features Althea Gibson holding a racket and ball on a tennis court near a net. The inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ALTHEA GIBSON,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” and “TRAILBLAZING CHAMPION.” The obverse (heads) depicts George Washington, based on Laura Gardin Fraser’s original design for the 1932 quarter commemorating Washington’s bicentennial. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2025.”
This marks the final year of the American Women Quarters collection series.
