The Australian Silver Koala series began in 2007, issued annually in gold and silver, with both bullion and proof versions. In 2016, Perth Mint offers 1 oz (limited to 300,000 coins) and 1 kilo (unlimited mintage) Silver Koalas. The reverse features a new design of an adult koala on a tree branch, with engravings for “Australian Koala,” year, weight, purity, metal content, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mark. The obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by “Queen Elizabeth II,” “Australia,” and “1 Dollar.” The Perth Mint, established under British rule and operating since 1970 under Western Australia’s government, produces legal tender coins.
