Spectacular Mark Twain Commemorative Silver Dollar!
It’s fitting this beautiful and highly collectable 2016 commemorative Silver Dollar, struck in 90% fine silver, artistically recreates the worlds that Mark Twain—American writer, humorist and comedian spun with his pen. Born in 1836 as Samuel Clemens in Hannibal Missouri on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, Twain is an undisputed icon of American literature and culture. His friends and acquaintances provided the characters and stories for some of his celebrated works, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Life on the Mississippi. With 2016 marking the 180th anniversary of his birth, the United States Mint could not let the milestone anniversary pass without issuing a spectacular tribute to the man who summed up life best with his saying, “Never put off till tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow!”
Struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, the obverse of this silver dollar shows a bust of the author smoking a pipe. The pipe’s smoke curls to reveal a reverse silhouette of Huckleberry Finn and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, on a raft in the background. The legends on the obverse include the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and the “P” mintmark for the Philadelphia Mint. The reverse displays an assortment of characters from his fertile imagination: the knight and horse from A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, the frog from The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and Jim and Huck.
Limited Edition Commemorative Proof Coin
