A total of 800,000 coins were authorized for both uncirculated and proof versions. The Special Olympics Dollar was released on May 2, 1995, with uncirculated coins priced at $32 and proofs at $37. During the release period, 89,301 uncirculated coins were distributed, while proof sales reached 351,764 units. Numismatic expert Q. David Bowers reported that approximately 250,000 proofs were purchased by a corporate organization for later distribution to Special Olympics athletes in 1998.
