Designs of the 1991 US Mint Uncirculated Coin Set
Five of America’s best known and admired presidents are on the obverses of these coins. Those presidents lend their names to the coins, which are referred to as the Kennedy half dollar, the Washington quarter, the Roosevelt dime, the Jefferson nickel, and the Lincoln penny. Lincoln is the only president to face to the right, and one of only two, along with Jefferson, to have his shoulders included in the image. In addition to the presidential effigies, the obverses also include, in varying locations, the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the year of issue, “1991,” the word “LIBERTY,” and a Mint mark.
Landmarks are depicted on the reverse of the pennies and the nickels, the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson’s Virginia home, Monticello, respectively. Two more, the half dollar and the quarter, have an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, though the image on the half dollar much more closely resembles the Great Seal of the United States. The dimes have an oak branch, a torch, and an olive branch. The values of the coins, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one), and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” are inscribed as well.
Both sides of the tokens have very simple designs. The first letter of the city in which they were minted appears in large font in the middle, while the full name of the city is inscribed at the bottom. The word “UNCIRCULATED” follows the rim on the top. On the reverse, “TREASURY” is inscribed at the top and “UNITED STATES MINT” at the bottom. In the middle is the seal of the US Mint. That is a shield with the scales of justice at the top and a key at the bottom.
